What Wool is Best for Spinning?
Long Wools Vs fine Wools( fibers) for spinning
Well in the land of spinning fibers there are so many different types of fibers you can choose to spin that it can be hard to even know where to start. Now there are many great books on this topic if you want to get into it but I mean this is more like my favorite go-to’s for both personal projects and a lot of what we produce here at CHY and My Local Wool.
One of the ways that I have most enjoyed learning about different fiber types is from the “ My Local Wool Sampler Boxes” As we get new farmers on our map and forge new relationships with them by sending out and promoting their fiber in our sampler boxes I get to handle all of the fiber while packaging them. This many times ( most all times) leads to me wanting to keep all of the fiber for myself. It has also helped me get a great idea of the feel and look of many different fibers in different “ put-ups” Roving, Batts, hand combed… etc.
We also have some great repeat favorites we use ( many times from these same small farms and mills) for our braid and fiber artist design boxes.
For the Braids we alternative often between USA superfine Merino, Rambouillet, and Targhee from VA and a USA Corriedale.
Merino and Rambouillet are both considered “ fine fibers” with a Micron countless that 20. Merino of course is a very popular fiber not just for spinning but also for nice sweaters in your favorite store. Merino is the “ softest” and to me has almost a cotton ball feeling to it. It also has a shorter ( but not super short) fiber length and is a bit crimpy. Rambouillet is like the cool cousin of the Merino in my opinion and we use it often in our braids it is very soft but with a somewhat longer more “lofty” fiber length.
Targhee and Corriedale both are considered “Medium Wools” They are not as fine as the previous two but they are also stronger. I love using wool from this section ( low 20s Micron count) for spinning yarn for fingerless gloves, slipper socks, outerwear… They also have a great draft, meaning they are easy to spin in my opinion so I think it’s great wool to be enjoyed by new and advanced spinners alike.
At the moment we don’t have a regular supplier of BFL roving for our braid clubs but we do love to get it in small batches and blend it up with our batts. I just love BFL and I think it’s my favorite example of a “ long wool” with a long fiber length and good strength BFL is great for spinning fine and also has a beautiful luster and hair-like quality.

We’re so proud of our hand-dyed braids. I wanted the perfect easy to use and inspiring fiber option for beginners and advanced spinners alike. Roving braids are very popular for a reason. We wanted braids that would live up to our standards here of supporting small farms and mills. These braids are from a small USA Farms and Mills with Ethical treatment of the Sheep. You will be billed once a month and will receive your box later that same month.
